RTV106 is a red, one-component, ready-to-use high temperature silicone sealant. This high temp silicone withstands temperatures up to 260C and handles brief exposure up to 315C. Aside from resisting high heat, the RTV106 is ideal for applications both indoor and outdoor. RTV106 qualifies as suitable for use near food production and cures at room temperature in only 24 hours.
RTV106 adheres well to many substrates including glass, metal and many plastics. Users do not need to use a primer to achieve excellent adhesion for most surfaces. RTV106 holds up under extreme temperatures, making it an ideal material for industrial use such as automotive and aerospace.
This red silicone cures to a tough, durable rubber on exposure to moisture at room temperature. Acetic acid vapors release from the sealant as it cures, however the odor will dissipate after full cure. Because the cure by-product is acidic, we do not suggest caution using this on some metallic surfaces. Our red silicone sealant has a paste-like consistency, ideal for vertical and overhead surfaces.
Because of its cure system, users must avoid applying this RTV silicone rubber glue more than 6mm (1/4 in). For depths exceeding 6mm (1/4 in.), we suggest using either one-component addition cure or two-component silicone compounds. The RTV106 is ideal for sealing around parts or staking, but will not work as a potting compound.
The RTV106 has a quick tack free time of just 20 minutes, allowing users a quick turnaround and handling. Parts can quickly move through the assembly line after application and passively cure during transport. Users can accelerate cure by subjecting the silicone to higher humidity, however full cure will still take several hours.
We recommend the RTV106 in applications that require sealing heating elements where other materials might fail. The fully cured rubber is non-conductive and insulates well against high voltages. The paste makes for an ideal form-in-place gasket that conforms to the contours of seals. The adhesive cures to a soft texture that easily compresses to form tight seals.
The ultra soft consistency of cured RTV106 makes the material ideal for bonding delicate components. The RTV106 has a low modulus and does not exert stress on delicate components, especially during thermal cycling. Bond joints with the RTV106 are less prone to failure from cracking in applications between 2 extreme temperatures.
The RTV 1035 comes in a handy squeeze tube that makes the material easy to dispense. Users can attach a funnel over the tip of the tube to get a smaller bead size if needed. This tool will help seal around finer edges. The adhesive is also available in cartridge format that dispenses through a caulking gun.
In harsh climates, RTV106 may not be the best material as it will not withstand exposure to chemicals like oil and other solvents. These liquids cause the rubber to swell and not adhere well to the shape of the substrate. Also, soft materials like silicone may not be best to protect components against hard impacts. Instead, consider hard materials like epoxy or polyurethane.
For white, black or translucent silicone adhesives, there is RTV102, 103 and 108 respectively. RTV162, 167, and 1035 are our electronics grade silicone adhesives. Our wide range of silicone-based products includes silicone potting compounds and silicone conformal coatings.
