832HD – Black Epoxy for PCB Potting

The 832HD is a black, rigid, 2-part epoxy. Once cured, the epoxy provides extreme environmental and physical protection for electronic assemblies and potted cables. This circuit board encapsulant cures to a hard, black finish, making the electronic devices tamper-proof. The 832HD is an ideal product where the main need is basic protection with no need for any other features.

The main features of the 832HD are that it’s thin and easy to use. When mixed, the 832HD is liquid-like, making it easy to apply the epoxy in thin layers if needed. This perk is ideal for electronic encapsulation; however, larger volumes for potting are also possible. The mix ratio and package options make this epoxy user-friendly.

The 832HD has a low mixed viscosity and can easily fill small gaps and pits. The PCB encapsulant is electrically insulating and protects components from static discharge. The epoxy cures to a hard finish with good chemical resistance. These features protect against shock and vibration, thermal shock, humidity, salt water, fungus, and many harsh chemicals.

General use epoxies like the 832HD are great products for protecting consumer electronics from a host of environmental factors. They protect against moisture much like coatings but also add depth to protect against any physical hazards. This depth however adds weight to the device so users must exercise care when deciding to coat or pot.

The 832HD finds use in many sectors like auto, aerospace, energy and general electronics. The epoxy is great for potting receivers since it does not hinder signals. In transport applications, PCBs benefit from epoxies like 832HD since the hard finish can withstand repeated impacts without breaking. The hard finish deflects kinetic energy away from the underlying components.

The epoxy contains no filler, optimizing not just the flow but also insulation. The cured plastic has a low dielectric constant meaning it does not block incoming signals. This feature makes the 832HD ideal for potting and bonding electronics in telecom and other communication devices. Any device that relies on receiving signals benefit from low dielectric constant materials.

The low viscosity and long working time permit users to apply the epoxy like a paint if needed. Some users have applied the 832HD over motors and stators in thin layers rather than common paints. Compared to paint, the epoxy is 100% solids and therefore goes on thicker. The thicker epoxy coat provides more insulation than a thinner paint allowing higher voltage.

The 832HD is general use for protecting PCBs in rough environmental conditions. Aside from its low viscosity and ease-of-use, the compound does not have special perks. The epoxy does not have assets like thermal conductivity, clarity, flame retardance or operation between extreme temperatures. These constraints do not rule out use of the 832HD for many applications though.

The 832HD has great adhesion and mechanical strength. It bonds strongly to metal, glass, wood and most plastics, with metal-to-metal bond strength over 3,000 psi. The epoxy is ideal not only in harsh environments but also mild climates since it is so tough to remove. This feature ensures protection against counterfeiting once potted.

The design of the 832HD prioritized ease-of-use and should be problem-free for users familiar with epoxy. Those with a past of epoxy adhesives or potting will appreciate how user-friendly the compound is. The thin liquid and convenient mix ratio mean the epoxy is easy to mix and remove air for a cleaner finished look.

This epoxy has a handy 1:1 volume mix ratio, making it compatible with most dispensing equipment. The system has no filler so the resin is gentle when dispensing through pump lines. The cartridge packaging makes it easy to apply the epoxy manually without introducing air into the mixture. The 832HD has a mild curing time with minimal exotherm and cures at room temperature or elevated temperatures.

Packaging is available either as a liquid kit or in a dual cartridge. The liquid kit sizes scale from small hobbyist users to large scale production. The low viscosity and mix ratio make it easy to dispense with meter-mix systems for best finishes. The cartridge dispenses through a mixing nozzle for air-free mixing using a cartridge gun.

For a 2:1 mix ratio consider 832B. For clear 2-part epoxies in applications that require monitoring, try our 832C or 832WC. We also offer flexible epoxy for sensitive electronics and less mechanical stress. Our 2-part flame-retardant epoxy potting compounds are 834B, 834HTC, 834BLV and 834FX.

Our 9510 is a 1-part epoxy that offers unmatched convenience. Users do not need to measure or mix individual components, simply dispense and cure. We also offer polyurethane and silicone potting compounds to fit every need.
