Lightweight Protection for MMIC-Based Designs In Harsh Environments

Customer Challenge:

Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit (MMIC)-based systems are commonly used in aerospace, satellite, and high-frequency communications, where exposure to humidity, salt, dust, and electrostatic discharge (ESD) can negatively impact reliability.

A manufacturer of MMIC–based communications systems approached us seeking a solution that could protect their electronics in harsh environments while remaining lightweight and allowing for quick, easy field repairs.

Due to their widespread presence in communication systems, MMICs require lightweight, rugged, reworkable protection that won’t interfere with RF signals

Key Customer Requirements

  • Rugged, lightweight protection
  • Reworkability for field repairs
  • Low dielectric constant: will not interfere with RF signals

Solution

We provided our urethane-based 4223F, a one-part, heat-cured conformal coating. Like our other conformal coatings, it is easy to apply and can be quickly soldered through for field repairs. Its low dielectric constant (2.86 @ 1 MHz) allows RF signals to pass through with minimal disruption, a critical feature for communication devices. 4223F’s urethane-based formulation combines a high degree of protection with ease of use, without the added weight of potting compounds.

Conclusion

MMIC-based systems are widely used for critical communications infrastructure across the globe, underlining the importance of not only increasing the reliability of these systems, but also facilitating their repair where possible. Conformal coatings are ideal for these systems due to their ease of use, lightweight, and reworkability. As these systems are commonly operated in harsh environments, conformal coatings like MG’s 4223F strike a perfect balance between durability, ease of use, and minimal added weight.
