Customer Challenge
While the promise of a regional logistics network operating entirely with drones has yet to be realized, there have been inroads made where small packages can be transported locally. Specifically, there are currently networks within cities where drones can transport packages up to 5 pounds within a 20-mile distance. This infrastructure has practical applications for time-sensitive deliveries such as organ transplants, where the organ has a narrow window until it must be implanted into the new recipient. To ensure a safe flight, it is imperative the drone’s structure is sturdy yet lightweight, requiring materials that balance mechanical strength with volume demand. Structural adhesives have become popular materials for body panel assembly given their high strength, moderate working time, ease-of-use and thick consistency for localized application. For this customer, the challenge was to find a structural adhesive that could secure the body panels of the drone without adding too much weight.
Key Customer Requirements
- Strongly adheres to carbon fibre
- Thick, non-sag consistency
- Easy-to-use, does not require much operator skill to apply
Solution
MG Chemicals’ 9200 is a 2-part structural epoxy adhesive. It has a thick, paste consistency, making it easy to localize for bonding parts. It bonds strongly to a wide variety of substrates including metals, composites, glass and many plastics. 9200 is packaged in convenient dual cartridges that accommodate mixing nozzles, affording the operator a foolproof and turnkey solution. Rather than having to measure and mix the 2 components prior to use, the adhesive can simply be dispensed from the packaging.
Conclusion
To ensure an aerodynamic structure, drone designers are replacing common fastening techniques like welding and riveting with adhesives that help keep the frame light while not compromising strength. Our 9200 offers high bonding strength, a paste consistency and convenient packaging, making the assembly of complex parts easy and reliable.
