Accelerating Production Lines with UV-Cure Adhesives

UV adhesives are polymer-based systems that begin to cure when exposed to specific wavelengths of ultraviolet (UV) light. These formulations offer several key advantages over traditional curing chemistries, making them highly versatile and well-suited for a wide range of applications. Key Advantages of UV Adhesives

Ultra-Fast Cure Times

One of the most significant benefits of UV adhesives is their extremely rapid curing speed. While many polymer systems require hours (or even days) to reach full cure, UV adhesives cure within seconds. This dramatically increases production efficiency and makes them ideal for high-throughput manufacturing environments, especially for products produced in large batches.Comparison chart showing cure times of three MG Chemicals 2-part epoxy adhesives (832HD, 9200, and 832C) at different temperatures, versus the UV-curable adhesive UVLED82. Epoxies require 24–48 hours at room temperature, 1–2 hours at 65 °C, 30 minutes to 1 hour at 80 °C, and 15–20 minutes at 100 °C. In contrast, UVLED82 cures in under 30 seconds with UV exposure.

Precise Application and Unlimited Working Time

UV adhesives such as MG Chemicals’ UVLED82 are compatible with precision applicator tips and automated or pneumatic dispensing equipment. Combined with their unlimited working time, users gain full control over the bonding process. There is no need to rush alignment and race against the clock; curing begins only when UV light is applied. This added control also allows easy cleanup of excess adhesive before curing, resulting in clean, professional finishes.

Excellent Material Compatibility

While UV adhesives vary by manufacturer and chemistry, MG Chemicals’ UVLED82 is engineered to bond effectively with a wide range of substrates, such as glass, many plastics, and metals.

Versatility

Products such as UVLED82 cure to a translucent, pale-yellow finish, which helps to hide their appearance and makes them suitable for bonding transparent or translucent substrates like acrylic and glass. They’re also excellent for applications requiring minimal visible bond lines. Our UVLED82 cures with exposure to not only conventional broadband lights but also LEDs such as 365nm, 385nm, 395nm and 405nm. Additionally, UVLED82 can be used for encapsulation up to 5 mm in thickness, making it suitable for small-component potting on ultra-fast assembly lines.

Ease of Use

Unlike many polymer-based adhesives, UV-curable systems require no heat. Inexpensive UV lights replace the need for ovens, heat guns, or ventilation equipment. These adhesives also require no mixing, significantly simplifying the application process.

Applications

UV adhesives excel in a wide range of industries and use cases, including:

  • Edge bonding of components on printed circuit boards (PCBs)
  • Assembly of disposable medical devices
  • Bonding mobile device screens
  • Bonding or aligning optical components for cameras, telescopes, and other precision instruments
